At the core of the celebration lies Saemien Sijte, where Sámi history and traditions come to life. Here, ancient stories meet contemporary Sámi society. Traditions and Activities for the Whole Family

The fire crackles, and stories come to life. Here, tales passed down through generations are shared—stories of nature, humanity, and Sámi philosophy. There is space for both reflection and laughter.

For the youngest visitors, the children’s theater Midvintersaga awaits, inspired by Zacharias Topelius’ story of Sampo Lappelill. Through joik, song, and circus, a magical experience unfolds for both children and adults.

Sápmi stretches across Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Russia. Food has always been central to the culture. During the celebration, visitors can taste traditional dishes. Let the scent of freshly grilled gáhkko, a soft Sámi bread, lead you to the fire where it is baked. Try reindeer sausage and gurpi—flavors that reflect the landscape and the changing seasons.

At the start of the new year, many of Djurgården’s museums and attractions are also busy preparing for the opening of new and exciting exhibitions. Some welcome visitors as early as January and February, while others open later in the spring. Below, we have gathered information about the upcoming exhibitions. Make a note of your favourites in your calendar and get ready for a spring filled with culture and discovery.

Våren finns i vintern- Jockum Nordström at Konsthall 16 30/1

In the first exhibition of the year at Konsthall 16, Hanna Sjöstrand presents a series of conceptual paintings that explore the structure and visual language of football. The works analyse the pitch’s geometric forms — the rectangle, the triangle, and the circle, a shape that is among the oldest symbols, representing the sun, unity, and infinity, and thus carrying mythological power.

The opening reception will take place on 30 January, 5–7 pm, where curator Ulrika Levén, together with the artist, will introduce the exhibition.

Vårsalongen 2026 at Liljevalchs 13/2

Liljevalchs Vårsalong is a cherished tradition with more than 100 years of history, presenting art from across Sweden. The exhibition features everything from painting, drawing, and sculpture to installation, video, and AI-generated art. This year, for the first time, artists from the entire Sápmi region were invited to apply, resulting in the participation of several artists from the area.The exhibition is jury-selected, all works are for sale, and prices are set by the artists themselves. From a total of 3,394 applications, 255 artists were selected.

At the Royal Djurgården Visitor Center, we are offering an early preview: as early as 13 January, visitors can experience the artwork Bengalia. The work is created by Nils Lagergren, who is also exhibiting in this year’s Vårsalong.

Enchanted Every Day Life- Elsa Beskow at Thiel Gallery 14/2

Enchanted Everyday Life is a atmospheric exhibition that invites visitors into the visual world of Elsa Beskow, where the everyday meets the magical. Through original works by the artist and children’s book author, a pictorial language emerges that has shaped generations of children and adults alike.

With works on loan from museums and private collections, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to experience Beskow’s richly detailed and poetic illustrations up close, and to explore how her art continues to shape our ideas of childhood, nature, and imagination.

Challenging the deep- James Cameron at Vasamuseet 4/3

With spring as a companion, the doors open to an exhibition where the role of the flower in art, design, and our cultural history comes fully into bloom. Painting, sculpture, photography, installations, and illustrated botanical works come together, spanning from the 16th century to the present day. Floral arrangements are also featured, both in the galleries and outdoors in the park.

The exhibition takes its starting point in Prince Eugen’s lifelong devotion to art and gardening. The flowering world is explored as motif, symbol, and source of inspiration. Art and nature are woven into a cohesive whole that reflects the unique spirit of the site. Det blommande is more than an exhibition—it is a living gesamtkunstwerk where nature, art, and history meet through guided tours, workshops, talks, music, food, and drink. Experience Waldemarsudde at its most vibrant and in full bloom.

Police Museum – New Exhibition Polisliv opens March 28
Polisliv portrays both dramatic and more everyday aspects of police work through a series of themed environments. The officers’ personal stories are sometimes powerful and difficult to take in, at other times uplifting, and occasionally quite humorous. Ultimately, you are given the chance to meet the person behind the uniform.

Tekniska Museet – Land of Dreams
Tekniska museet presents its largest exhibition ever: Land of Dreams. The exhibition takes visitors on a journey through 150 years of technological history, telling the story of how a small, poor country on the outskirts of Europe became one of the world’s most innovative societies. By exploring the role of technology, innovation, and dreams in Sweden’s development, visitors gain insight into how ideas and inventions not only transformed the nation but also left a lasting mark on global technological progress.

Absolut, Absolut- Museum of Swedish Drinking Culture, planned start 9/5

Discover the story of Absolut Vodka – the Swedish brand that took the world by storm. The exhibition features iconic advertisements, unique bottles, artistic collaborations, and creative environments that show how boldness and innovation turned a simple product into a global icon.

Here are my four absolute favorite spots for an amazing start to the new year, along with my own tips to make each experience extra special!

Explore the world of imagination at the Museum of Etnografiska 

The holidays are a stressful time, so I prefer to wind down in January and fill the month with a little magic. My top recommendation is the Museum of Etnografiska, which is perfect for starting off the new year.

There you can dive into the fascinating new exhibition Sagovärldar. It’s like stepping straight into another world, full of incredible adventures and stories from all around the world. I highly recommend trying to catch one of their storytelling sessions, which are included in the ticket (they run during the holiday from January 2–6). It’s truly the best way to keep your imagination and playfulness alive.

Enjoy the view from one of the many cafés and restaurants

No matter how you choose to spend your time, this is my best tip for maximizing that cozy vibe. January is all about having fun so you can start the year in the best way possible.

That’s why I recommend taking a refreshing walk around the whole of Djurgården. Enjoy the beautiful surroundings, the crisp winter air, and the timeless calm that Djurgården is known for. The island is full of great places to eat and warm up! My tip is to pick one of the many cozy cafés or restaurants for the perfect ending to your outing. It’s an easy way to combine fun activities with some recovery.

See what life used to be like in Nordbor

One of my personal favorites for all of us history lovers is a visit to the Nordiska Museum for a deep dive into Swedish culture. I would start with the exhibition Nordbor.

Imagine a timeline stretching across 500 years, from the 1500s all the way to today, filled with fascinating details about how people actually lived throughout the ages. You’ll follow 22 real, filmed historical stories and check out around 4,000 objects that bring each era to life. My best tip? Go through it twice! It’s only in the second round that you notice all the little details you missed the first time. Afterwards, take a break and enjoy the architecture of the impressive grand hall.

Enjoy a run around Skansen

To wrap up January in the best possible way, my final tip is one that requires a bit more movement. Set aside the evening of January 31 when it’s time for the awesome Winter Run at Skansen.

Bring your friends and run one or two 5 km laps around Skansen. Besides getting some exercise, you’ll need to think outside the box. It’s a competition in creativity! Put on every light you own; headlamps, glow sticks, LED strips or anything that shines, to compete for great prizes in the “Most Illuminated” category. And for those who feel that 5 km is a bit too far, Skansen also has a 1.3 km kids run for ages 7–11. It’s going to be an incredible, energetic evening lit up from every direction and one you won’t forget anytime soon!

Create a New Year’s tradition by visiting museums together

Why not start a new tradition by bringing family and friends for a full day at one of the many open museums on New Year’s Eve? Kick off the celebration early at ABBA The Museum. Warm up for the evening by singing ABBA karaoke, become their fifth member and perform on stage together with ABBA and test your ABBA knowledge in the museum’s quiz. Nordiska museet is open all day and offers atmospheric tunes in the main hall, come by and listen to jazzy and classical music from the grand piano.

Take a trip back in time on New Year’s Eve. The Viking Museum is open from 10 am to 3 pm, where you can learn more about who the Vikings really were and why they became both famous and infamous worldwide. Don’t miss the opportunity to take a journey in the museum’s Viking adventure, Ragnfrid’s Saga, where you can travel back to the Viking Age. On New Year’s Eve, the Vasa Museum welcomes you between 10 am and 2.30 pm. Come by and experience Vasa, the world’s only preserved 17th-century ship, and gain a fascinating insight into Sweden’s history during this time.

For families with children, there are fun options on New Year’s Eve, such as the children’s theater “Pippi moves in” at Junibacken and their fantastic story train, where you can dive straight into Astrid Lindgren’s magical world.

With its 12,000 square meters, Tekniska museet has something for everyone curious. On New Year’s Eve, they are open from 10 am to 3 pm, and during the day, you can, among other things, you can join a guided tour of the model railway, see pop-up shows and experience space like never before. Step aboard the spacecraft Wisdome Stockholm, put on the 3D glasses, and get ready for an adventure through the Universe with a pilot and a navigator offering an amazing space show.

Take a break from museum visits and visit Djurgården Church, which holds a New Year’s prayer at 3 pm. Enjoy a quiet moment with prayer, music and atmospheric songs.

New Year’s Eve Dinner, entertainment and party

Hasselbacken is the obvious choice when it comes to festivities and New Year’s celebrations, and this year is no exception. This year, Hasselbacken celebrates New Year with both a luxurious 4-course New Year’s dinner and entertainment by The Jets. At midnight, raise a toast for 2026 at the terrace with a fantastic view of Stockholm’s inlet. If you just want to join the after-party, buy your ticket via the Hasselbacken website.

Skansen

For those who want to ring in the New Year with an unbeatable view of Stockholm, Skansen is the perfect choice. Skansen’s New Year’s celebration dates back to 1895 when the poem “New Years Bell” was first recited. The poem has become a Swedish tradition and is broadcasted every year on SVT, where the words “Ring, Bells, Ring” are something many associate with Skansen’s New Year’s celebration.

This year, actor and director Helena Bergström has been given the prestigious and time-honoured role of reading Lord Alfred Tennyson’s poem The Bells of the New Year.

The New Year’s celebration is hosted by Linnea Wikblad and André Pops, with Johan Granström’s orchestra accompanying the evening’s performers. Featured artists include Tommy Körberg, Charlotte Perrelli, Greczula, Fanny Avonne, and Tensta Joyful Noise.

While waiting for midnight, you can enjoy two vibrant New Year’s concerts in Seglora Church at Skansen. Welcome by and listen to fiery baroque music, folk hymns and medieval ballads performed on 30 different instruments.

During the day at Skansen, there’s also a Christmas market with around 20 market stalls selling delicious food and drinks, delicacies, handicrafts, and design. Children can participate in traditional Christmas crafts, go on an exciting sound walk, follow Santa’s footsteps among Skansen’s houses and farms, and visit the animals at Lill-Skansen. Skansen-Aquarium is also open, where you can explore the exotic animals that lives there. If you’re brave enough, you can even pet a snake or a spider in their petting corner. It promises to be a day filled with fun and exciting experiences for the whole family!

Enjoy a New Year’s Eve Dinner Before Midnight

Ring in the new year with style by indulging in a New Year’s Eve dinner at one of Djurgården’s many restaurants. On this special evening, exclusive three- and four-course menus are offered. Of course, there are options to suit everyone, from meat and fish to vegetarian dishes. Nordiska museet 

During the Christmas break, the Nordic Museum transforms into a playful and exciting holiday destination for families. From December 20 to January 6, the museum is open every day and offers interactive missions where children and adults become time-traveling explorers of Nordic history.

You can help with the Christmas preparations on a 1890s farm in the Playhouse, step through the magical portal in the Time Vault to experience different eras, and together solve the case of the Marzipan Thief among historic candy figures. In addition, the museum’s classic exhibitions can be explored in a cozy environment adorned with a Christmas tree and decorations, with opportunities for fika, holiday cheer, and stories from the past.

Skansen 

Skansen transforms into a lively winter park for the whole family. You can play and craft at Bragehallen, listen to music and take audio-guided hunt for Santa´s tracks. The animal park is active and you can find out how Christmas has been celebrated throughout history.

Vrak – Museum of Wrecks  

VRAK – Museum of Wrecks invites you to a winter adventure beneath the sea. Here, you step straight into stories of dramatic shipwrecks, Vikings, trade, and life at sea – all brought to life through interactive environments, film, sound, and VR experiences.

Children and adults can explore the secrets of the wrecks together, try out creative activities, join family tours, and experience what it feels like to dive to the bottom of the Baltic Sea without getting wet.

Maritime Museum

During the holiday, the museum offers family tours and storytelling sessions, giving both young and old the chance to explore its fascinating objects and stories together. For the curious, there are holiday spy and treasure hunts that encourage activity and curiosity throughout the exhibitions, and the youngest children can immerse themselves in the Blubb play and discovery corner, exploring underwater worlds, submarines, and sunken treasures. Here, you’ll find activities that engage both heart and mind while learning more about humanity’s long relationship with the sea

The Viking Museum 

The Viking Museum becomes a living and mysterious world where the Vikings’ early winter traditions and trade take center stage. You are welcomed by the dramatic theme “Viking Yule and Trade”, inviting you and your family to explore the museum’s exhibitions and follow the exciting Trade Journey – an interactive family adventure where you experience what it was like to be a traveling merchant, ask questions to the Vikings themselves, and learn how goods, ideas, and knowledge were exchanged over a thousand years ago.

Every day during the holiday, guided tours are offered in Swedish and English, including special family tours that combine history with storytelling. For those seeking an extra experience, the week also features thematic events such as Midwinter Blót – a ceremonial tribute inspired by Viking traditions that provides a dramatic and atmospheric insight into how the gods were honored during midwinter.

ABBA The Museum 

During the Christmas holidays, four mischievous elves have hidden packages in the exhibitions at ABBA The Museum. Get Mum and Dad or a friend to help you find them! Join the dance school or create your own souvenir. You can also meet the legendary Owe Sandström, who designed ABBA’s stage costumes. Find more information on the website.

Junibacken 

Junibacken transforms into a magical winter oasis for the whole family, where imagination can run free. The entire house is dressed in festive holiday décor, and every day there are theatre performances inspired by beloved children’s books, with the special Christmas production Pettson Gets a Christmas Visit bringing laughter, warmth, and adventure for both young and old.

You can also board the magical Story Train, which glides through classic fairy-tale worlds, and explore playful exhibitions where children can discover, play, and create together. In Junibacken’s bookstore, the holiday reading corner offers books that spark a love of reading and winter imagination, while the café invites visitors to warm up and recharge between play and storytelling sessions.

The Vasa Museum 

At the Vasa Museum, you can experience a vivid and exciting world of history for the whole family. From December 26 to January 6, you can take a time-travel journey back to 17th-century Stockholm with the museum’s child-friendly audio guide The Boy and the Ship, following young Olof’s dreams of life aboard the mighty ship Vasa. Along the way, various hands-on activities and experiments spark curiosity about life on the ship and how the Vasa was built and sailed – or didn’t sail – away.

For younger children, there is the charming film Vasa the Pig, telling the adventures of the pig Lindbom aboard the ship, followed by a playful treasure hunt through the museum. For the whole family, a family trail guides you through the most fascinating parts of the exhibition at your own pace.

National Sport’s Museum 

In the workshop, children can create their own Christmas cards and decorations, and anyone who wants can enter a competition to design a holiday-themed hockey stick. In Little Sport Lab, there’s climbing, balance exercises, table tennis, and fun craft activities, while families can embark on the action-packed “Find the Sport” treasure hunt to earn their diploma. On the yard, there are daily throwing competitions at 2 p.m., and if there’s snow, extra winter activities will be added. The Silly Olympics run throughout the holiday, and in the café, there are hobby horses and hockey games for play when energy needs a boost.

National Museum of Science and Technologie 

Looking for exciting activities for kids in Stockholm during the Christmas holidays? Then the Tekniska museet is perfect. There’s a whole host of activities for kids of all ages to discover – from interactive exhibitions to creative workshops. The openinghours  10am – 9 pm is hard to beat!

The museum of Ethnography

At the Museum of Ethnography, the whole family can immerse themselves in the cultures and story worlds of the world. The museum is open for most of the holiday period and welcomes visitors with imaginative exhibitions and activities that spark curiosity and conversations about our shared human heritage.

Every day during the holiday, there are storytelling sessions where you and your children can enter the magical exhibition Worlds of Stories, where projections, interactive stations, and tales about characters like Tiddalik the Frog and the mythical Queen Arrawello bring the stories to life. In addition, you can explore the museum’s fascinating collections from around the globe, discover clues throughout the exhibitions, and let your imagination run free in the museum’s open and engaging spaces.

Every year on December 13th, Sweden lights up the winter darkness with the enchanting celebration of Lucia. Rooted in both ancient folklore and Christian tradition, Lucia has become one of the country’s most beloved cultural events symbolizing hope, light, and community during the darkest time of year.

Beyond the candles and songs, Lucia carries a deeper meaning for many. It is a reminder that even during the darkest days of winter, light returns—and that coming together to share warmth and tradition brings its own kind of brightnes.

Experience a traditional and atmospheric Lucia procession in the beautiful Seglora Church. The first Lucia procession at Skansen was held as early as 1893! The concerts are approximately 25 minutes long. The concert is included in your ticket, but you need to reserve your spot the same day.

At Bollnästorget inside Skansen, the winter air fills with the scent of mulled wine and roasted almonds. Skansen’s Christmas market, which has been held since 1903, is a tradition in itself – a place where past and present meet through dance, music, crafts, and community. As you wander between the stalls, you can feel the presence of history: hand-dipped candles, wooden crafts, wool products, delicacies, and locally produced foods turn the market into a living cultural heritage. At the dance floor, folk dance groups and a Christmas orchestra gather daily – a welcoming and warm feature that attracts both children and adults to dance around the Christmas tree.

Nordic Museum Christmas Market – Sustainable Elegance in the Great Hall

A completely different kind of Christmas magic awaits as you step into the Nordic Museum on 7 December 2025. In the museum’s magnificent Great Hall, exhibitors focusing on upcycling, vintage, and fine craftsmanship gather, carefully curated by decorator Gustav Broström.

Here, the gifts are not only beautiful – they carry stories. Antique dealers, second-hand specialists, and artisans present their finds and creations, turning each table into a tribute to care, sustainability, and conscious consumption.

At the same time, the museum’s large Christmas tree is adorned with unique, handcrafted decorations made from stars, cookie cutters, and metal wire – a tribute to recycling and artistic expression. The restaurant and museum shop offer Advent treats and thoughtfully selected gifts, perfect for those who wish to celebrate a conscious and inspiring Christmas.

The World Christmas Market at the Maritime Museum – Scents, Rhythms and Traditions from the Horizon

At the Maritime Museum, the Christmas market takes you on a journey across the seas. On 29–30 November, the quays and the museum courtyard are filled with stalls offering crafts, food, and culture from around the world.

Here you will find everything from Baltic handicrafts to flavours and decorations rooted in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The music, dance, and rhythms create a warm, global Christmas celebration – in the midst of Stockholm’s winter cold.

The World Christmas Market is not just a marketplace, but a cultural hub where different traditions shine side by side, and where you can discover new perspectives on what Christmas can be.

 Christmast Market and Open House at Handarbetets Vänner

Shop for your Christmas gifts and enjoy arts and crafts and Advent treats in the historic atmosphere of the pink house on Djurgården.

On 29 November, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., you’ll have the opportunity to buy this year’s Christmas gifts made by the school’s students. Café treats will be available for purchase, and new for this year is that the Christmas market will be held in Handarbetets Vänner’s Gallery. During the day, Handarbetets Vänner’s School will open its doors to the studios where the future textile and craft professionals are trained. Students and teachers will be on site to give guided tours and present their three full-time textile education programmes.

Beckmans Christmas Market – Creativity and Design at Rosendal Greenhouse

If you’re looking for distinctive Christmas gifts with a creative and design-driven feel, Beckmans’ Christmas market at Rosendals Trädgård is a must. On 6–7 December, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the annual market organized by Beckmans College of Design takes place, where students in fashion, product design, and visual communication exhibit and sell their own designed works.

Coffee and lunch are available at Rosendal’s café. A bonfire is lit in the courtyard, enhancing the Christmas atmosphere. In addition to student design, you can also visit Rosendal’s farm shop and plant shop for garden-related Christmas gifts and delicacies.

Transportation: Djurgården is easily reached by public transport (bus, tram) or by ferry, depending on where you are travelling from.

Skansen believes that all children and families, regardless of economic circumstances, should have the opportunity to experience the museum. In order to make that possible from October 7th children ages 0-15 have free entry.

As one of Sweden’s most visited cultural institutions, Skansen has long worked in various ways to increase accessibility for children and young adults. The government’s guidelines include the mission to provide children with access to culture, but with the current state funding, a free admission reform has not been possible. Skansen has chosen to implement this reform using its own resources.

Once again, they have secured a top position on the European amusement park map. At this year’s prestigious European Star Awards in Barcelona, the park was awarded two top honors.

Ikaros claimed first place in the category Best European Thrill Ride – for the second year in a row.

Since its inauguration in 2017, Ikaros has become a must for adrenaline seekers, thanks to its unique tilting drop mechanism.

Pumpen, Gröna Lund’s 2025 novelty, won third place in the category Europe’s Best New Big Attractions.

As part of Scale Stockholm – an EU-funded project run by the City of Stockholm to achieve the city’s climate and health goals – the Royal Djurgården Society (KDI), Royal Djurgården Administration (KDF), the City of Stockholm, and the Swedish Cycling Association are collaborating on a cycling route analysis.

The goal is to map and improve accessibility for cyclists to and around Djurgården. The results, based on cyclists’ own experiences, will serve as a basis for dialogue with politicians and those responsible for the city’s infrastructure.

And you can help influence it.

How it works

• August 14 at 6 PM – Kick-off via a digital information meeting.

• Afterwards, no later than September 8, you cycle a predetermined route: Slussen – Evenemangsparken – Rosendal – Museiparken – Royal Djurgården Visitor Center.

• You share your reflections through a simple form that will be sent to those who have signed up to participate.

It’s simple, concrete, and valuable – and everyone is welcome to take part.

Skansen

Skansen has celebrated Midsummer since the 1890s and this year it will be celebrated for three whole days between June 20-22. The celebration begins on June 20 (midsummer eve) and the day begins with, among other things, midsummer wreaths, markets as well as dancing around the midsummer pole, the pole is raised at 11:00 a.m. There will be a midsummer concert Symbio in the magnificent Seglora church.

During Midsummer, June 20-22, there will be singing, dancing, games and markets. Every day the wise old woman at Kyrkhultstugan tells about magical beings and forces that ravage the bright midsummer season. All this and much more is happening, read more on their website!

Tasty midsummer at Djurgården’s restaurants

An important part of all holidays is of course the food, and several of the restaurants on Djurgården serve traditional Midsummer menus. Both long-established Villa Godthem and Ulla Winbladh and Newer Stockholm 1897 and restaurant Eld offer all the flavors of the holiday with a personal twist. The cozy atmosphere and delicious flavors are the perfect way to celebrate.

Do you want to enjoy midsummer food in the greenery? Or do you want to impress loved ones with a tasty midsummer buffet? Skroten Deli produces a midsummer bag filled with everything you need. Everything from Västerbotten pie and spring onion herring to egg halves topped with hand-peeled prawns & chive mayonnaise.

Take a trip on the water

Many of the Archipelago’s beautiful islands have midsummer celebrations where you will find midsummer bars, traditional games and dancing, as well as restaurants with midsummer food on the menu. One of the easiest and most pleasant ways to get out to the islands is with Strömma boats. A little shrimp chill before you get off at Vaxholm for a leg stretcher?Their website shares tips about midsummer celebrations and what the different islands have to offer as well as more info about their tours. They run regular lunch and dinner cruises during both midsummer and the rest of the summer.

The Viking Museum

Midsummer is originally a tradition that has its roots in old Nordic religion and mythology. The Viking Museum organizes a Midsummer Blot at 15:00 outside the museum to celebrate Midsummer in an old Norse way and honor the gods. Blot is a way of expressing affinity with the Gods and the ancestors.
