Paris of the North at Nordiska museet

Timeless elegance, exquisite craftsmanship and tailor-made dreams

Travel back in time to the golden age of haute couture and the northernmost outpost of Paris fashion in Nordiska museet’s new fashion exhibition Paris of the North. The exhibition, which opens on September 17, presents fashion from the French Couture Atelier at the NK department store in Stockholm during the 20th century.

The trendy fashion atelier of that time, created personal-made masterpieces based on customers’ unique measurements by the highest craftsmanship that still inspires to this day. Some of the design brands that were ordered by the Scandinavian public included Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, and Yves Saint Laurent. It was NK’s French Couture Atelier that spread international fashion in the Nordic countries.

In Paris of the North you get to learn both about the customers of the well-known atelier, as well as the tailors working inside of it. Customers included royalty, upper-class society, professional women, and the stars of stage and screen. Among those celebrities were Princess Sibylla, Queen Louise Mountbatten, Astrid Sampe, Nanna Svartz, Greta Garbo, and Zarah Leander. The customers arrived at the atelier via the legendary golden elevator from the beauty and fragrance department on the ground floor, straight up to the sophisticated pearl grey salon.

See hundreds of garments with inspiration from the Paris fashion, adapted to the northern weather conditions. Have a visual encounter with the legendary atelier and those who populated the two parallel worlds. All of this and a little more in the exhibition Paris of the North at Nordiska museet.
