On board Vasa

Are you one of those who dream of getting on board the Vasa ship? Royalty and Nobel laureates have been allowed to do so, but rarely the museum’s other visitors. Now it becomes possible for anyone – through 42 short films.

Boarding Vasa is a big dream for many, but the ship is too fragile for that to be allowed. Through the films that will be released on March 10 on the Vasa Museum’s website and on the museum’s Instagram account, the dream is almost coming true. Through the films, you can see what Vasa looks like inside.

In the film On board Vasa, you get to follow the Vasa Museum’s research director Fred Hocker, who shows all the decks on the ship. Fred explains how places and features were meant to be used.

– It’s really fun to be able to show the whole ship, even the parts that are always hidden from visitors, says Fred Hocker, director of research at the Vasa Museum.

In each episode, Fred Hocker shows a space on the ship and tells about what it is, how it was used and what interesting details may remain.

An important aspect of the film is to document how the ship looks like today. In the near future, a new support system for Vasa will be developed – both inside and outside – and it will not be possible to access all spaces in the same way as today. During 2022, the Vasa Museum has therefore carried out extensive documentation work in photography and film on board the Vasa. During the work, the idea of also producing another type of film was born. A film that takes the visitor on board.

Take part in the films here.

Liljevalch’s Spring Salon 2023

The Spring Salon at Liljevalch’s is a dear, contentious and lively tradition since its inception in 1921. The spring salon is a jury-judged exhibition where all works are for sale and the price is set by the participants themselves.

This year 4,135 people applied to Liljevalch’s Spring Salon, which is a new record. Only once before has the number of applicants exceeded 4000.

As in previous years, women dominated among the applicants and the selection includes a mix of techniques, ranging from painting, drawing and sculpture to installation, video and AI-generated art. Painting is the most common technique, including mixed media painting.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue in which each exhibitor is presented with a work. From the day of the opening, the artists’ own texts about their work will be available on Liljevalch’s website.

This year’s jury consisted of art scholar Isabella Nilsson, artist Jockum Nordström, and jury chairman Isak Nilson, deputy director of Liljevalchs art gallery. The Spring Salon starts on February 24 and will be on display until April 23, find out more information about Liljevalch’s Spring Salon here.

Fall break on Royal Djurgården!

Djurgården tips for the autumn holidays 2022!

At Royal Djurgården, we love autumn almost as much as summer. The leaves are changing colour and soon Djurgården will be a fantastic colourful island with lots of activities for young and old alike. Perhaps you’d like to go on a coffin hunt? Why not solve an exciting mystery at Skansen? Learn how Day of the Dead is celebrated in Mexico? Or why not take a course in programming at the Museum of Technology?

We offer a wide range, so grab your pen and notepad because here are some of our top Djurgården tips for the 2022 autumn holidays!

Ghosts, ghouls and demons!
Autumn is full of scary creatures hiding in the dark. For the fifth year in a row, Gröna Lund is opening its doors to gas-guzzling monsters, five houses of horrors and a parade of frights that will make even the bravest of us crazy. If you’re not a big fan of horror, you can always stay in the small area. Filled with pumpkins and friendly witches, it’s a perfect place for young and old alike to enjoy; it’s nothing short of an autumn paradise.

A stone’s throw away from Gröna Lund is The Viking Museum. In October, the museum becomes even more magical and a bit spooky! During the autumn holidays, the museum is filled with brutal and frightening anecdotes about bloody, historical events from the Viking Age. The family tours will not be as scary, but will focus on folklore and mythology. Dare to join the staff after closing time and find out what goes on in the museum when the lights go out or why not be divined by mysterious Wolves who can tell your future? There will also be a cosy Autumn Ball. They will talk about the Viking festival and perform a blot ceremony.

Or maybe you want to get back in the school desk and learn about “Day of the Dead”? For more than 30 years, the Mexican holiday Dia de Muertos has been celebrated at the Museum of Ethnography and on November 5-6 it’s happening again! The museum will celebrate the holiday with Mexican folk dance and music, a market, a tour, sacrificial altar ofrenda, a film screening, and creative activities in the museum’s creative workshop. The music and dance performance “Fiesta en el cementario/Fest in the Cemetery” will be performed several times during the weekend. Performers include the folk dance group Mexico Lindo and the Mariachi orchestra Fiesta México.

For the family that prefers to sit in front of the fire, cozy up and grill sausages, we have the perfect autumn holiday activity!

Skansen has autumn holidays for the whole family. A mystery on the theme of discovery and strange plants in the City Quarter.

An exciting and mysterious adventure where you will help the children of the Secret Society to solve the mystery of the strange plant. You’ll meet the explorer Viola of Compassroos, a curious journalist, the singing sailor Vega Våghals and a bunch of other interesting characters! Look for clues, solve riddles and help the Secret Society solve the mystery of the City Quarter. Whoever is really clever and solves the mystery gets a reward. You can always challenge the family to a cane-horse jump, at the Order House Brofästet. Skansen has a great selection for those who can’t make up their minds.

Why not take a tour of the Nordic Museum during the autumn holidays? What really happens at the Nordic Museum after dark? There’s something strange about the old museum building. A lot of mysterious traces and figures have been seen lately. The museum assures us that everything is in order. But rumor has it that the old creature archive has been left unlocked. For two evenings in the autumn holidays, you have the chance to find out for yourself. The Nordic Museum welcomes Halloween-weary families to an interactive museum experience filled with mysterious creatures and folktale stories.

Also don’t miss the autumn holidays at the Museum of Wreck’s. During the autumn holidays, there are daily family screenings at 1pm starting with watching the film “Sea of Memories”. Take the opportunity to also look around the museum’s many different exciting exhibits and take a VR dive on a wreck! During the week, you will also be able to make crafts in the museum!

Take inspiration from autumn and be creative during the autumn holidays!

Prince Eugene’s Waldemarsudde has organised the perfect autumn holiday activity for those interested in art and theatre with a focus on clothing and fashion. Isaac Grünewald’s paintings are filled with shimmering colours and interesting characters. In both self-portraits, portraits of friends and costume sketches, clothes are used to emphasise characteristics and stories. We will begin with a tour of the exhibition followed by a studio workshop where we will create our own experimental fashion collages inspired by the paintings.

On the other side of the water, the Maritime Museum offers a glimpse into the Escape from the Baltic and the children who fled across the Baltic Sea during the Second World War. We listen to their stories. We read aloud from children’s books about children on the run and create together on the theme. They also offer a coffin hunt and a creative workshop.

Swap autumn holidays for reading and programming holidays!

Junibacken offers a reading holiday full of fun for both children and adults, with everything from theatre to nightmare rooms and ice cream. Almost every day the show Skinn Skerping – the scariest of all ghosts in Småland, based on Astrid Lindgren’s short story, is on and is perfect for children aged 5 and upwards. Reading holidays at Junibacken offer autumn play in Sweden’s largest Moomin playground, theatre every day and an exciting ghost hunt. Between 29 October and 6 November, all children who come dressed up will get an ice cream, an apple or why not both. There’s room for nightmarish spiders, cute monsters and speedy unicorns. Welcome to a magical autumn holiday at Junibacken!

If you take the bike 10 minutes from Junibacken and follow Rosendalsvägen, you’ll end up at the Museum of Technology, and here the focus is on a proper programming course. Discover explosive space shows, explore the Hyper Human exhibition or take a tour of Zero City. Learn the basics of programming by coding with various graphical and tactile programming tools. No prior experience is required, but since we work with block code, basic reading comprehension is helpful. You participate in the course without adults or other family members. Perfect for those who are curious!

Right next to the Museum of Technology is the Police Museum, where you can go on an exciting tour of crime scene investigations, ending with a look at how the police go about securing fingerprints! What’s the first thing the police have to do when they arrive at a crime scene? And what happens next? What kind of clues can you find there? And who is actually looking for all the clues?

If none of the above appeals, why not take a leisurely stroll around Djurgården? Look at the leaves that have changed colour and go into one of the many cafés, under EAT you will find several options.

There is an incredibly wide range of activities here on Djurgården and we have only mentioned a few. Open up our calendar or take a look further down to find out about all the other fun happening here this autumn!

Royal Djurgården is presented the Green Destinations Platinum Award

Royal Djurgården is, together with Slovenia’s capital Ljubljana, one of the two first metropolitan destinations in the world to receive the sustainability award Green Destinations Platinum Award. The sustainability work done is awarded the highest level of Platinum as Royal Djurgården fulfil 94 percent of approximately 100 sustainability criteria based on criteria set by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, GSTC.

– “Being an important part of the vibrant Swedish capital of Stockholm, Royal Djurgården offer nature, culture, recreation, and entertainment to over 15 million visitors every year. We want to lead the way for a more sustainable tourism and a sustainable Stockholm. Therefore, we are very proud to be one of the first metropolitan destinations in the world to have received this award”, says Camilla Zedendahl, CEO of Royal Djurgården Society which spearheads the work.

The Green Destinations Award is presented to destinations that successfully work with sustainability issues and meet a wide range of criteria in sustainable management, animals and nature, environment and climate, culture and tradition, social sustainability, and hospitality. The criteria are based on the 17 sustainability goals that the UN has set within the framework of Agenda 2030.

In the independent review, the work Royal Djurgården has done within sustainability issues in all GSTC topics in the last six years is highlighted as “a lighthouse for sustainable destinations worldwide where a destination included in a capital city can focus on all necessary issues in a structured way.”

The sustainability work at Royal Djurgården is driven by a passion to connect the Swedish cultural heritage with future ambitions for a sustainable city and a sustainable tourism industry. Royal Djurgården’s work is done in broad cooperation within the destination as well as with Visit Stockholm and Visit Sweden. The work is guided by long-term goals within four focus areas: fossil-free and traffic-smart, sustainable food culture, being open, accessible, and welcoming and to be an ever-ongoing world exhibition for sustainability.

– “The Green Destinations Platinum Award given to Royal Djurgården in Stockholm is a fantastic acknowledgment on the Swedish determination to reach the vision of Sweden being the world’s most sustainable and attractive destination built on innovation”, says Susanne Andersson CEO of Sweden’s Marketing Company, Visit Sweden.

Facts about the Green Destinations Award
The award is given by Green Destinations, who are accredited by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council for the certification of sustainable destinations based on the UN’s sustainability goals. The award will be presented at the Green Destinations 2022 Future of Tourism Summit in Athens on September 27. There are four different levels of the award – bronze, silver, gold and platinum – depending on what percentage of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council‘s sustainability criteria the destination meets.

The Vasa Museum’s autumn program is off to a good start. In conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the Baltic Sea Festival, a concert will be held in the ship’s hall with the Baroque ensemble L’Arpeggiata, which brings the 17th century to life with Latin and jazz influences.

As usual, we will celebrate Gustav Adolf Day on 6 November, and this year we will do so together with Richard Tellström, a food historian, who will talk about the world of matidé in the 17th century, says Elin Petersson, program manager at the Vasa Museum. She continues:

– It is wonderful that program operations are fully restored after two years of pandemic restrictions. Now we look forward to a fantastic autumn of programming with our visitors!

Afternoon tea at the Vasa Museum includes a cultural history talk and a delicious plate of treats to accompany your tea. This autumn’s talk is about colours in the 17th century. Soup lunches with lectures take place on Thursdays and pea soup is served, of course. The popular craft evenings with the Vasa Museum’s costume researchers are back on Wednesday evenings, with coffee and inspiration from the ship Vasa and the 17th century.

On Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15 June, it is time again for this year’s Blodomloppet, which will be held on Djurgården. But what is the point of the race? Well, the purpose of the race is to raise awareness and to demonstrate the need for blood donation and to promote a healthy lifestyle. The proceeds of the race will go back to the youth activities of the organizing associations and to promoting the importance of blood donation.

This is a purpose that we at Royal Djurgården support one hundred percent.

About the race

The start and finish of Blodomloppet is in the meadows around the Djurgårdsbrunn inn. The first start is at 16:30 but already hours before, participants will arrive at the event area. The event is expected to end around 21:00. Participants will run or walk 5 km (red) or 10 km (yellow) according to the route below.

Road closures

During these two days there will be some limited traffic, so we recommend that you take extra care in planning your trip.

We will restrict access on the Manilla Road from the junction of Kaknäsvägen/Manilla Road between 4pm and 9pm. There will be a driving ban for participants.

Hunduddsvägen will also have a parking ban and restricted access for participants between 6pm and 7.30pm.

Blockhusringen limited access between 16.00 and 19.30

Bus line 69 will turn at Kaknästornet between 16.00-21.00 on these days (i.e. will not continue towards Blockhusudden).

We hope that events will not be too disruptive. But if it does remember that it is for a very good purpose.

Warm greetings

From IFK Lidingö Athletics Club and IFK Lidingö Ski & Orienteering Club, organisers of the Stockholm Blood Race.

You can find more information about the Blodomloppet on their website here.

An eventful week

Djurgårdslinjen - Spårvagn, Vagn 76

When Royal Djurgården is at its most exciting, we welcome everyone – except the car.

During the 2- 7 June there will be lots of fun events around Stockholm and especially here at Djurgården. This will be evident in the wonderful atmosphere that will permeate the whole island. During these days, all visitors to Djurgården will have the chance to experience fantastic events such as the Swedish National Day at Skansen, concerts at Gröna Lund, the Stockholm Marathon, the Marine celebrating 500 years and much more.

Many people are looking for us and in order for everyone to be able to get around, we need to think traffic-smart. We know that a few cars risk clogging up the entire main street of Djurgården and therefore we have chosen to close the Bridge to Djurgården to car traffic during these days. Because when Djurgården is at its most exciting and eventful, we welcome everyone – except the car.  With a car-free Djurgården, we are also testing converting parking spaces into places for art, cycling schools and people. So On 2-7 June, the Djurgården Bridge will be closed to car traffic, for a more accessible and delightful Djurgården.”

It’s a public festival in the city and everyone is welcome, but bear in mind that  to take an extra look at how you plan your trip. As roads and bridges will be closed, we advise all our visitors to reach us by foot, bike or public transport.

Welcome to Djurgården!

Summer is coming to Djurgården – our best tips

Take a walk in The Royal National City Park

The long-awaited spring has finally arrived, and that means that Stockholmers and visitors from all over the world are flocking to Djurgården as soon as they have a spare moment.  Perhaps you are one of them? Then here are some spring tips for you.

For many people, life in a big city can start to feel a bit hectic and stressful after spending a long time there, no matter how great the city is. That’s what makes Stockholm, and Djurgården in particular, so unique, as it is home to the world’s first National City Park. It gives people a chance to get away from their hectic everyday lives and find their inner peace.

In our opinion, one of the best times to visit is right now during spring. As the park is home to over 800 different flowering plants and around 100 species of nesting birds, it gives our visitors the perfect opportunity to experience spring in Scandinavia’s largest city.

But it’s not just us who think the place is unique, Djurgården has been called “Stockholm’s most beautiful island” and is appreciated by many.

Here are some tips from us at Royal Djurgården on what not to miss when you visit our lovely island.

Blockhusudden

One of the most popular walking routes in Stockholm is along the Djurgårdsbrunn canal. If you follow it all the way out, you will eventually reach Blockhusudden and Thielska Galleriet. There you can quietly enjoy one of Sweden’s foremost art museums, with a unique collection from the turn of the last century featuring works by Edvard Munch and August Strindberg, among others.

Waldemarsudde

At Waldemarsudde we find the Prins Eugen konstmuseum where you can experience its fantastic art collection, garden and park. Now during this year’s “Spring Flowers in the Park”, our guests will have the opportunity to join the park’s gardener, Marina Rydberg, who will give a tour of the magnificent garden when it is full of spring flowers such as tulips, daffodils and many different kinds of bulbous plants.

5 Cafés you should not miss

Rosendals trädgårdskafé

Are you craving for a nice cup of coffee? Then stop by the popular café in Rosendal’s Garden, one of Stockholm’s absolute favourite places to enjoy a good cup of coffee and some homemade bread and pastries in its botanical garden. Because there’s not much that beats a freshly baked cinnamon bun with loved ones in the spring sunshine while listening to the birds chirping in the background.

Arthurs Kafé

At what was until 1938 the central entrance to the open-air museum Skansen, you will now find the newly opened Arturs Kafé. The beautiful Hazelius Gate from 1907 has been carefully renovated and transformed into a Viennese café with a lovely bar and outdoor seating area with an inviting atmosphere that resonates well with the history of the place.

Blå Porten

For more than a hundred years, tourists and Stockholmers alike have enjoyed classic dishes and pastries in the beautiful surroundings of Blå Porten. A beloved watering hole on Djurgården since 1916 when restaurateur Agnar Meurling opened the summer restaurant with an Italian-inspired garden. Nowadays, Blå Porten is open all year round and invites you to a unique, historic setting where you can enjoy Swedish home cooking and a fantastic coffee table.

Café Monika Ahlberg

Along Blockhusudden we find Thielska Gallery’s café, privately run by food creator Monika Ahlberg, who is known for her cookbooks and her previous work at Rosendals Trädgård.

It serves lunches such as soup with freshly baked bread, sandwiches in several varieties, hot smoked salmon with basil potatoes and rum sauce, country potato dish with cumberland sauce and various salads. There is also always a “Special of the Day” which varies. In addition, many different types of homemade pastries are offered.

It is also possible to have a glass of wine or beer with your meal. During the summer months, you can take your lunch and snacks out into the sculpture park.

Skroten Café & Skeppshandel

Skroten Café & Skeppshandel is located in a small alley at Nya Djurgårdsvarvet, right next to Beckholmen and Gröna Lund. The café is neighbours with the glittering Baltic Sea, the old workers’ housing and the creaky jetties.

What makes the Café so unique is that they offer a wonderfully rustic atmosphere among ship’s lanterns, tamarinds and lifeboats amidst the sweet smell of tar and sea. We highly recommend stopping by for a tasty and well-prepared lunch, a cup of coffee with freshly baked raspberry pie or perhaps a dinner of a hearty fish stew and a glass of wine on their delicious outdoor terrace.

Finally- Spring on Djurgården

Vår på Djurgården och vackra vårblommor blommar

Spring is finally here and we are leaving the cold and dark winter months behind us. After two years of a pandemic, it’s finally time to get back to normal. All the museums and restaurants will be open just about every day during spring.  Below we have gathered some inspiration and tips on things to do this spring on Djurgården, as well as some tips on Easter holiday activities for the whole family.

A joyful Easter holiday

Here at Djurgården, Easter is one of our favourite times of the year and we want to share that feeling with all our visitors. During the Easter week, there will be lots of fun activities to explore in all corners of Djurgården. Activities that will make all kinds of visitors, big and small, feel and share the same love for Easter as we do!

Take the whole family on an Easter adventure at Junibacken where there will be activities in the house with Mamma Mu and the Crow. Cozy up in the reading corner, do crafts in the Pavilion or go on a crow hunt. You can also meet Mummy Mu and the Crow who will be visiting Junibacken on Easter Sunday! There will be different theatre performances every day and if one of the kids show up dressed up, they will get a free Easter egg!

At Skansen you can take part in traditions in houses and farms, listen to legends and music, do Easter crafts or tie a broom.

At the Nordic Museum, there are several clever missions for children and adults to solve together in the museum: gather knowledge from the inhabitants of the Arctic in the exhibition Arctic – as the ice melts, solve the mystery of the missing marzipan figure or follow clues and hunt for letters in the fashion exhibition ”British so into the Nordic countries”.

An island of art and culture

Djurgården is unique with its greenery in the middle of a capitol city like Stockholm. Artists have always come here to share or seek inspiration for their art, from Bellman and his songs to Prince Eugene and his unique way of capturing Stockholm on canvas.

This long-standing tradition has, of course, contributed to Djurgården now boasting one of Europe’s most impressive art collections and cultural heritages. You can’t walk around the island without being greeted by a wonderful inner peace and tranquillity that makes you want to explore your own creative vein.

Throughout spring there will be a continuous stream of new and interesting exhibitions in many of our museums. From the German-Swedish Ann Wolff, an international award-winning artist known for her stunning glass artworks, to the French artist duo Pierre et Gilles and their exhibition “Troubled Waters”, which depicts the romantic image of the sea, the harbour and seafaring life.

At the far end of Blockhusudden, you’ll find the hidden gem  Thielska Galleriet, considered one of Sweden’s finest art museums, with a unique collection of turn-of-the-century artworks by Edvard Munch and August Strindberg, among others.

Gröna Lund reopens

After a two year pandemic, we can finally say that our amazing Gröna Lund is opening again. On 24 April, the park welcomes you to a magical summer with many rides on their carousels! This year is also an incredible startup with concerts on the big and small stage with everything from Zara Larsson, Dua Lipa, Tom Jones, Ziggy Marley and more. You don’t want to miss it!

A culinary journey

Did you know that the popular and tasty Hasselbackspotatisen originates from Hasselbacken on Djurgården? Check out their menu where Hasselbackspotatis is presented in a whole new way.

Djurgården also has a wide selection of cafés and restaurants. From the venerable Wärdshuset Ulla Winbladh to the Michelin star restaurants Oaxen and Aira.

Now that the weather is getting milder, many of the restaurants are opening up. One not to be missed is the Blå portens lovely garden lounge, which becomes a lively meeting place with a cosy 20th-century ambience.  When the spring sun is at its strongest, how about settling down with a glass of wine or a snack at the Spritmuseum restaurant while the kids sink their teeth into a ice cream cone.

Along the Djurgårdsbrunn canal you can find Villa Källhagen where there will be a nice garden hangout with a wide variety of music, ranging from Opera and Livejazz to a DJ with various guest artists.  So bring your friends and enjoy the summer while listening to some really great tunes.
