TASTE AN APPLE
Sweden is home to more than 240 known apple varieties, and over 120 of them can be found on Royal Djurgården, including heritage trees dating back to the 1860s. One of these is Skansen’s very own apple variety, discovered only a few years ago.
Every autumn, Royal Djurgården celebrates its love of apples with the annual Apple Festival. In 2026, the festival takes place from 23–27 September. Throughout the festival, restaurants, museums and gardens across the island celebrate the apple through delicious food, inspiring experiences and fascinating stories.

POMOLOGIST VISIT – 27 September
Would you like to know which apple varieties are growing in your garden? Bring three apples of each variety from your tree, and pomologist Mats Brokvist can help you identify them.
You can meet the pomologist at Lusknäppen on Sunday 27 September, between 11:00–15:00. (In case of bad weather, the event will be moved indoors to the Main Hall at the museum.)

PRINSENS KÖK, PRINS EUGENS WALDEMARSUDDE
In the orchard at Prince Eugen’s Waldemarsudde, apple trees have flourished since the Prince’s time and are still carefully tended today as an important part of the estate’s cultural heritage. The orchard is home to several heritage apple varieties, including the well-known Cox Pomona. In the past, the fruit was carefully harvested and preserved, then made into juice, jams and fruit compotes for the household.
Enjoy waffles with apple sauce and cream, apple cakes, and traditional potato cake with pork, apples and lingonberries. The historic orchard still contains several heritage apple varieties.
RESTAURANG ELD OCH THE VIKING MUSEUM
A special three-course apple menu inspired by Nordic flavours. During museum tours, discover the story of Idun’s golden apples, the mythical source of eternal youth.
ROSENDALS TRÄDGÅRD
With its historic orchard, where the first trees were planted in the 1860s, the apple plays a central role at Rosendal Garden. In fact, the apple tree is even featured in the garden’s logo.
This year, the orchard and its apples are being celebrated in a special way, as 2026 marks the 165th anniversary of the planting of the first trees. The celebrations began in May during the annual apple blossom season with the launch of Fruktträdgården (“The Orchard”), a unique collection of glassware created by Swedish glass artist Linnéa Hedenus.
ROSENDAL APPLE WEEKEND
25–27 September
Celebrate the flavours of autumn and the remarkable diversity of apples during Rosendal’s Apple Weekend. Immerse yourself in the sights, aromas and tastes of the harvest while learning more about fruit growing, heritage varieties and traditional fruit preservation.
Explore a wonderful selection of apples and pears that are rarely found in supermarkets, all grown locally in Rosendal’s biodynamic orchards. Certified by both KRAV and Demeter, the gardens produce fruit and vegetables without synthetic pesticides, offering visitors a truly local and sustainable taste of the season.
In addition to an exhibition showcasing a selection of the garden’s 50 apple varieties, you can visit the Apple Bar, join a guided tour of the historic orchard with Rosendal’s gardeners, and enjoy a delicious selection of fruit-inspired pastries from the renowned wood-fired bakery.

Fruit Exhibition
Rosendal’s gardeners have gathered this year’s harvest from the orchard to create a beautiful display of apples and pears, showcasing the remarkable diversity of the garden’s fruit varieties.

Beloved Apples – Guided Orchard Tour (in Swedish)
Join Rosendal gardener Elis Annersten for a guided walk through the historic orchard. Learn about the orchard’s history, discover fascinating facts about apples, and receive expert advice on choosing different apple varieties. The tour lasts approximately 45 minutes and begins at the Fruit Exhibition in the orchard. Admission is free, but places are limited, so advance registration is recommended.

Apple Bar
Visit the pop-up Apple Bar in the courtyard, where apples take centre stage in both food and drink. Sample seasonal apple-inspired refreshments and celebrate the harvest in a relaxed garden setting.

SKANSEN
Fruit growing in Sweden has a long and rich history. During the 17th century, the nobility established large orchards on their estates, while soldiers returning from campaigns on the continent brought back new cultivation knowledge and fruit varieties to Sweden.
Skogaholm Manor at Skansen, with its historic apple orchard, is a wonderful example of this heritage. The orchard is home to many different apple varieties, including both well-known varieties and more unusual heritage apples.
Visit the historic orchard and experience the annual Autumn Market (26–27 September), where apples form a natural part of Sweden’s living cultural heritage.
