From generation to generation
The world’s first National City Park turns 30!
Welcome to the Royal National City Park – right in the heart of the Swedish capital, not far from the hustle and bustle, lies a large area. A place where nature is free to thrive and where peace can embrace both body and soul. Here, culture and entertainment meet in a unique harmony with nature.
The National City Park’s Anniversary Calendar
There’s always something happening in the National City Park, and perhaps especially this year, as the park celebrates its 30th anniversary. To mark this occasion, we have created an anniversary calendar to make it easy for you to find information about what’s happening throughout the park. See below for details.
It was 30 years ago that the world’s first National City Park was inaugurated by the king Carl XVI Gustaf, here in Stockholm. Why, you might wonder? People had realized how invaluable the area, which is now the National City Park, truly was. In 1994, the Swedish Parliament decided to establish the park as a National City Park, granting it a special level of protection that is unique in its kind.
Preserve, Care & Display
The National City Park was inaugurated in 1995 and has since been guided by three core values: preserve, care, and display. These principles have shaped the park’s mission to pass on knowledge and joy from generation to generation.
In the National City Park, people and wildlife coexist in harmony. The park’s open landscapes are not only a place for city residents to recharge but also a vital resource for biodiversity.
With an area of 27 km², the National City Park provides a stunning contrast to Stockholm’s urban center of buildings and asphalt. Here, you’ll find lush fields and forests, beachfronts, and water. Museums, music scenes, restaurants, and cafés. Art galleries, monuments, and statues. It’s a space for people to gather and experience, discover, and appreciate.
Join us in celebrating the National City Park’s 30th anniversary!
