Upstairs at Stora Gungan: A Mini Museum of cookbooks

Start with a “Gubbröra” on freshly baked bread, then climb the old wooden staircase to discover what feels like a mini museum of cookbooks. Wooden walls and hidden nooks are filled with thousands of cookbooks from around the world—new, old, rare, and familiar. Pick a book that speaks to you and dive into your culinary adventure. Whether you’re looking for a recipe to impress your next dinner guests, seeking vegan inspiration, exploring sushi creations, or brushing up on your German for Oktoberfest, you’ll find a recipe here. Vintage cookbooks, such as Prinsessorna kokbok from the early 1900s, are waiting to be explored, while some of the most special works are framed and displayed like art, featuring names like Cajsa Warg alongside Chef KC himself.

For any food enthusiast, the upstairs dining room is a dream: a cozy corner to linger over a warm cup of coffee and freshly baked bread, while immersing yourself in the rich history of cookbooks and culinary tradition. True to Skansen’s spirit, the moment you step inside, the setting itself is an experience. Chef KC Wallberg has crafted a restaurant and menu as meticulous as the details found throughout Skansen.

At Krogen Stora Gungan, only the finest ingredients are used, each rooted in Swedish heritage. The food is a harmonious blend of history and flavor—where tradition meets thoughtful craftsmanship on every plate. Krogen Stora Gungan is both a celebration of Swedish cuisine and an invitation to explore flavors from around the world.

Lucia Celebration

The Magic of the Swedish Lucia Celebration

Every year on December 13th, Sweden lights up the winter darkness with the enchanting celebration of Lucia. Rooted in both ancient folklore and Christian tradition, Lucia has become one of the country’s most beloved cultural events symbolizing hope, light, and community during the darkest time of year.

Beyond the candles and songs, Lucia carries a deeper meaning for many. It is a reminder that even during the darkest days of winter, light returns—and that coming together to share warmth and tradition brings its own kind of brightnes.

Free Admission for All Children at Skansen

Skansen has so much to offer– culture, nature, history, knowledge, and reflections on how people have lived through time and live today.
Skansen believes that all children and families, regardless of economic circumstances, should have the opportunity to experience the museum. In order to make that possible from October 7th children ages 0-15 have free entry.

As one of Sweden’s most visited cultural institutions, Skansen has long worked in various ways to increase accessibility for children and young adults. The government’s guidelines include the mission to provide children with access to culture, but with the current state funding, a free admission reform has not been possible. Skansen has chosen to implement this reform using its own resources.

For that we are very grateful!

Double the Thrill: Gröna Lund Takes Home Two European Star Awards

We are so happy for Gröna Lund!

Once again, they have secured a top position on the European amusement park map. At this year’s prestigious European Star Awards in Barcelona, the park was awarded two top honors.

Ikaros claimed first place in the category Best European Thrill Ride – for the second year in a row.

Since its inauguration in 2017, Ikaros has become a must for adrenaline seekers, thanks to its unique tilting drop mechanism.

Pumpen, Gröna Lund’s 2025 novelty, won third place in the category Europe’s Best New Big Attractions.

The new family-friendly yet exhilarating experience has become an instant success. Pumpen, is only the second attraction of its kind in the world – and the first in Northern Europe. It is a giant swing with pumping and pendulum-like motions that create sensations of weightlessness, speed, and free fall.

We’re thrilled for the entire team, who continue to strengthen Gröna Lund’s position as one of Europe’s most innovative amusement parks.

If you didn’t get the chance to try out Pumpen this season, or are seeking an adrenaline thrill with Ikaros you still have a chance. The attractions will be open during Halloween at Gröna Lund – and we can’t think of a better time of the year to let out a little scream as the park transforms to spooky for Halloween.

Check out their schedule here.

Liljevalch’s Spring Salon 2023

The Spring Salon at Liljevalch’s is a dear, contentious and lively tradition since its inception in 1921. The spring salon is a jury-judged exhibition where all works are for sale and the price is set by the participants themselves.

This year 4,135 people applied to Liljevalch’s Spring Salon, which is a new record. Only once before has the number of applicants exceeded 4000.

As in previous years, women dominated among the applicants and the selection includes a mix of techniques, ranging from painting, drawing and sculpture to installation, video and AI-generated art. Painting is the most common technique, including mixed media painting.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue in which each exhibitor is presented with a work. From the day of the opening, the artists’ own texts about their work will be available on Liljevalch’s website.

This year’s jury consisted of art scholar Isabella Nilsson, artist Jockum Nordström, and jury chairman Isak Nilson, deputy director of Liljevalchs art gallery. The Spring Salon starts on February 24 and will be on display until April 23, find out more information about Liljevalch’s Spring Salon here.

Blodomloppet comes to Djurgården

Time for this year’s Blodomloppet

Hello all visitors, residents, riding clubs, boat clubs, restaurants and museums on Royal Djurgården.

On Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15 June, it is time again for this year’s Blodomloppet, which will be held on Djurgården. But what is the point of the race? Well, the purpose of the race is to raise awareness and to demonstrate the need for blood donation and to promote a healthy lifestyle. The proceeds of the race will go back to the youth activities of the organizing associations and to promoting the importance of blood donation.

This is a purpose that we at Royal Djurgården support one hundred percent.

About the race

The start and finish of Blodomloppet is in the meadows around the Djurgårdsbrunn inn. The first start is at 16:30 but already hours before, participants will arrive at the event area. The event is expected to end around 21:00. Participants will run or walk 5 km (red) or 10 km (yellow) according to the route below.

Road closures

During these two days there will be some limited traffic, so we recommend that you take extra care in planning your trip.

We will restrict access on the Manilla Road from the junction of Kaknäsvägen/Manilla Road between 4pm and 9pm. There will be a driving ban for participants.

Hunduddsvägen will also have a parking ban and restricted access for participants between 6pm and 7.30pm.

Blockhusringen limited access between 16.00 and 19.30

Bus line 69 will turn at Kaknästornet between 16.00-21.00 on these days (i.e. will not continue towards Blockhusudden).

We hope that events will not be too disruptive. But if it does remember that it is for a very good purpose.

Warm greetings

From IFK Lidingö Athletics Club and IFK Lidingö Ski & Orienteering Club, organisers of the Stockholm Blood Race.

You can find more information about the Blodomloppet on their website here.

An eventful week

Djurgårdslinjen - Spårvagn, Vagn 76

When Royal Djurgården is at its most exciting, we welcome everyone – except the car.

During the 2- 7 June there will be lots of fun events around Stockholm and especially here at Djurgården. This will be evident in the wonderful atmosphere that will permeate the whole island. During these days, all visitors to Djurgården will have the chance to experience fantastic events such as the Swedish National Day at Skansen, concerts at Gröna Lund, the Stockholm Marathon, the Marine celebrating 500 years and much more.

Many people are looking for us and in order for everyone to be able to get around, we need to think traffic-smart. We know that a few cars risk clogging up the entire main street of Djurgården and therefore we have chosen to close the Bridge to Djurgården to car traffic during these days. Because when Djurgården is at its most exciting and eventful, we welcome everyone – except the car.  With a car-free Djurgården, we are also testing converting parking spaces into places for art, cycling schools and people. So On 2-7 June, the Djurgården Bridge will be closed to car traffic, for a more accessible and delightful Djurgården.”

It’s a public festival in the city and everyone is welcome, but bear in mind that  to take an extra look at how you plan your trip. As roads and bridges will be closed, we advise all our visitors to reach us by foot, bike or public transport.

Welcome to Djurgården!

Summer is coming to Djurgården – our best tips

Take a walk in The Royal National City Park

The long-awaited spring has finally arrived, and that means that Stockholmers and visitors from all over the world are flocking to Djurgården as soon as they have a spare moment.  Perhaps you are one of them? Then here are some spring tips for you.

For many people, life in a big city can start to feel a bit hectic and stressful after spending a long time there, no matter how great the city is. That’s what makes Stockholm, and Djurgården in particular, so unique, as it is home to the world’s first National City Park. It gives people a chance to get away from their hectic everyday lives and find their inner peace.

In our opinion, one of the best times to visit is right now during spring. As the park is home to over 800 different flowering plants and around 100 species of nesting birds, it gives our visitors the perfect opportunity to experience spring in Scandinavia’s largest city.

But it’s not just us who think the place is unique, Djurgården has been called “Stockholm’s most beautiful island” and is appreciated by many.

Here are some tips from us at Royal Djurgården on what not to miss when you visit our lovely island.

Blockhusudden

One of the most popular walking routes in Stockholm is along the Djurgårdsbrunn canal. If you follow it all the way out, you will eventually reach Blockhusudden and Thielska Galleriet. There you can quietly enjoy one of Sweden’s foremost art museums, with a unique collection from the turn of the last century featuring works by Edvard Munch and August Strindberg, among others.

Waldemarsudde

At Waldemarsudde we find the Prins Eugen konstmuseum where you can experience its fantastic art collection, garden and park. Now during this year’s “Spring Flowers in the Park”, our guests will have the opportunity to join the park’s gardener, Marina Rydberg, who will give a tour of the magnificent garden when it is full of spring flowers such as tulips, daffodils and many different kinds of bulbous plants.

5 Cafés you should not miss

Rosendals trädgårdskafé

Are you craving for a nice cup of coffee? Then stop by the popular café in Rosendal’s Garden, one of Stockholm’s absolute favourite places to enjoy a good cup of coffee and some homemade bread and pastries in its botanical garden. Because there’s not much that beats a freshly baked cinnamon bun with loved ones in the spring sunshine while listening to the birds chirping in the background.

Arthurs Kafé

At what was until 1938 the central entrance to the open-air museum Skansen, you will now find the newly opened Arturs Kafé. The beautiful Hazelius Gate from 1907 has been carefully renovated and transformed into a Viennese café with a lovely bar and outdoor seating area with an inviting atmosphere that resonates well with the history of the place.

Blå Porten

For more than a hundred years, tourists and Stockholmers alike have enjoyed classic dishes and pastries in the beautiful surroundings of Blå Porten. A beloved watering hole on Djurgården since 1916 when restaurateur Agnar Meurling opened the summer restaurant with an Italian-inspired garden. Nowadays, Blå Porten is open all year round and invites you to a unique, historic setting where you can enjoy Swedish home cooking and a fantastic coffee table.

Café Monika Ahlberg

Along Blockhusudden we find Thielska Gallery’s café, privately run by food creator Monika Ahlberg, who is known for her cookbooks and her previous work at Rosendals Trädgård.

It serves lunches such as soup with freshly baked bread, sandwiches in several varieties, hot smoked salmon with basil potatoes and rum sauce, country potato dish with cumberland sauce and various salads. There is also always a “Special of the Day” which varies. In addition, many different types of homemade pastries are offered.

It is also possible to have a glass of wine or beer with your meal. During the summer months, you can take your lunch and snacks out into the sculpture park.

Skroten Café & Skeppshandel

Skroten Café & Skeppshandel is located in a small alley at Nya Djurgårdsvarvet, right next to Beckholmen and Gröna Lund. The café is neighbours with the glittering Baltic Sea, the old workers’ housing and the creaky jetties.

What makes the Café so unique is that they offer a wonderfully rustic atmosphere among ship’s lanterns, tamarinds and lifeboats amidst the sweet smell of tar and sea. We highly recommend stopping by for a tasty and well-prepared lunch, a cup of coffee with freshly baked raspberry pie or perhaps a dinner of a hearty fish stew and a glass of wine on their delicious outdoor terrace.

Stockholm Culture Night 2022

Experience Autumn at Djurgården

We love autumn almost as much as summer. The leaves change color and soon Djurgården will be a fantastic coloroful island with a lot of activities for both young and old. Maybe you’re craving a little BBQ? Why not experience Halloween at Gröna Lund? Or learn about a new culture?

There’s a wide range of different activities, so grab your pen and notepad, because here are some of our best tips on what to do this fall 2021!

Ghosts, demons, and witches!

Usually lurking in the dark autumn brings forward the nasties of creatures. For the fourth year Gröna Lund open its doors to Halloween. This time they offer terrifying monsters, five haunted houses and a horror parade that will make the bravest run for their life. For those who are not very fond of the horror genre, you can always stay in the small area. Filled with pumpkins and kind witches, it’s a perfect place for all families. It is nothing less than an autumn paradise!

A stone’s throw away from Gröna Lund is The Viking museum. Here you can experience autumn in vikingstyle. Tag along and join them on a guided tour where they discuss death and life after this.

For more than 30 years, the Mexican holiday, Día de Muertos – Day of the Dead – has been celebrated at the Museum of Ethnographic. The Holiday focus on honoring the memory of the dead. The weekend of November 6-7 The Museum of Ethnographic celebrates Die de Muertos with a craft market, home alters called ofrendas, dance and music performance with the folk-group Mexico Lindo and Mariachio Orchestra Fiesta Mexico.

For the family who prefers to sit in front of the fire, cuddle and grill sausages, we have the perfect autumn holiday activity for you!

Skansen has autumn activities for the whole family. They offer everything from BBQ to witch broom flying. Maybe Grandma wants to help with the quiz round? Or do mom and dad want to play old games from the past? You can always challenge the family to bowling at Kägelbanan by Gubbhyllan. Skansen has a large selection of activities for those who can’t decide.

At Junibacken you exchange the autumn holiday with a reading holiday. They have a lot of activities planned. For example, their bookstore has selected the best ghost stories for children and their parents. Here are both friendly ghost stories as well as real nail-biters. Additionally, they are opening the very special nightmare room and it’s not as scary as it sounds. Here children can write down or draw their nightmares and then leave it in the nightmare box. In the room you can also listen to other kids’ nightmares and fantasies about horrific stuff.

If none of the above attracts, why not take a walk around Djurgården? Look at the leaves that have changed color and go into one of the many cafes. Under EAT you will find several options.

There is an incredibly wide range of activities here at Djurgården and we have only mentioned a few. Open our calendar or take a look further down to take part in all the fun that is happening this autumn!

Of course, the metro runs as usual, so why not take the red line to Karlaplan or Östermalmstorg and walk the last bit to Djurgården.

How to walk from Östermalmstorg: From Östermalmstorg, go up the stairs that leads to Birger Jarlsgatan. Follow the road down to Berzelii Parken and then follow Strandvägen all the way to Djurgårdsbron. The walk takes about 20 minutes at a normal walking pace. You will be there in no time!

How to walk from Karlaplan: From Karlaplan, go up the stairs that leads to the Karlaplan roundabout. Then follow Narvavägen straight down to Djurgårdsbron.  The walk takes about 15 minutes at a normal walking pace. Simple and easy to follow!

Once you’ve reached Djurgårdsbron, you can always continue walking along Strandvägen to Dag Hammarskjölds Väg. It is a 20-minute walk that leads directly to Museiparken (Museum park) outside Tekniska museet, or a 5-minute bike ride if you choose to rent a bike from the Royal Djurgården Visitor Center. The visitor center is to the right, right after Djurgårdsbron.

Djurgårdsbron – temporarly closed for car traffic

Djurgårdsbron closed to car traffic but you as a pedestrian are free to pass. The Djurgårdsbron will be opened at 14:45. Some car traffic can take place over the Djurgårdsbron by prior agreement.

Vrak – Museum of Wrecks opens September 23

It’s not every day a new museum opens at Djurgården, but now it’s finally time! We’re happy to welcome Vrak – Museum of Wrecks, which will open on the 23 of September. The museum is located at Djurgårdsstrand 17, between the Vasa Museum and Gröna Lund, it lays only a few meters from the water.

Vrak is perfect for the curious ones and the history buffs. The museum tells the story of more than 100,000 wrecks that have been found at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. Through immersive film experiences the visitor can move down to the seabed of the Baltic Sea and, among other things, walk along the mythical wreck, “Resande Man”. With the help of digital solutions such as VR dives, archive dives and games the museum manages to bring history to the surface without affecting and disturbing the seabed of the Baltic Sea.

Vrak is the Vasa Museum’s new sister museum and is part of the Swedish Maritime and Transport History Museums. Functional architect Paul Hedqvist designed the boat hall for Vrak – the Museum of Wrecks. The building has retained its exterior, but has been given a modern makeover on the inside. Through collaboration with Fahlander architects and construction contractor Serneke, they have carefully rebuilt the boat hall with sustainable materials such as concrete, oak, steel, and glass. They have taken inspiration from the sea, ships, and the seabed to renovate the boat hall into a building where man meet sea. The museum is now nominated for the ROT-award and The Betongpriset for the careful rebuilding.

On Wednesday 22 September, Vrak will be inaugurated with a visit from the King. If you cannot wait, there is already material on their website, vrak.se. There you can find wreck stories, films about wrecks in the Baltic Sea and much more.

Skansen’s Christmas market one of the world’s best

Skansens julmarknad, utsmyckningar och dekorationer

If you don’t know what to do this weekend you can visit one of the best Christmas markets in the world, at Skansen! CNN Travel has listed the 17 best Christmas markets in the world and of course the long tradition of Christmas market at Skansen earned a spot.

This tradition has been alive ever since 1903 and is extra special because of the location of the market, inside the zoo. In that way you can, while you find unique and handcrafted Christmas gifts, also look for Rudolph among the animals that enjoy the winter season just as much as us.
