The Waldemarsudde Oil Mill

Oljekvarnen Royal Djurgården

The Waldemarsudde oil mill is a wind-powered mill on Djurgården in Stockholm. The mill is located at Prince Eugen’s Waldemarsudde, and featured in many of the prince’s paintings. It was built in 1784 and used to produce linseed oil.

The builder was a merchant, Carl Magnus Fris, who acquired the Waldemarsudde property in 1782. The sails of the Waldemarsudde oil mill are missing, but it is otherwise well-preserved. The mill is of the type known as “Dutch mill”, where it is only necessary to turn the roof to catch the wind. The oil mill is a rare piece of industrial history, and one of five such structures remaining in the world.

The Prince Eugen Oak

Prins Eugens ek Royal Djurgården

The Prince Eugen oak is growing in the park to the north of Prince Eugen’s Waldemarsudde. It is believed to be the oldest living oak tree on Djurgården – and in the whole of Stockholm. The oak tree originally had three trunks. When measured in 2006, it was 21 metres high. The circumference of the trunk was 9.2 metres, and its volume was 45 cubic metres. The age of the tree is estimated to be between 300 and 400 years.

Oak trees were protected in Sweden in the 16th century, so that they could be used as timber to build warships. The punishment for cutting down an oak tree during the period when Sweden was a major power was death – oak trees were the property of the king. Oak trees were protected right up until the 1830s, and this is why so many oak trees remain on Djurgården and throughout Sweden.

The Glacial Erratic at Blockhusudden

Blockhusuddens flyttblock

Glacial erratics are large rocks that have been transported by ice. It is believed that most of the glacial erratics in Sweden were transported during the most recent ice age. The glacial erratics accompanied ice sheets and glaciers as they advanced over the land. The erratics remained in place when the ice melted, which in the Stockholm region took place around 10,000 years ago. A building of timber and stone known as a “blockhus” was erected here during Gustav Vasa’s reign (Swedish King, 1496–1560) to protect the approach to Stockholm, giving the point its name.

Rosendal Palace

The royal pleasure castle Rosendals Castle on Djurgården, was built in the 1820s for King Karl XIV Johan. The king bought the country estate Rosendal and developed it with a castle, buildings and a park area that could also be used by the public. There was also a pontoon bridge over for the military exercises at Ladugårdsgjärde. Nowadays, there is a larger bridge here, Folke Bernadotte’s bridge, across the bay to the museum park.

To a large extent, the castle still stands today as it did during Karl Johan’s time, which makes Rosendal a unique document of the Swedish empire style, so-called Karl Johan style. During the summer months visitors are given the opportunity to go on guided tours of the castle.

From Djurgårdsbron and to Rosendal’s castle area, there are guided park walks on various themes in the app ‘Kungliga promenader’ (free to download where apps are downloaded).
