Skansen

Skansen är världens äldsta friluftsmuseum

Founded in 1891, Skansen is the world’s first open-air museum. Visitors to Skansen meet a historical Sweden reflected both in the buildings and their surroundings. Some 150 historically interesting houses and farmsteads have been moved to Skansen over the years from all over Sweden to preserve their original materials and beauty.

Skansen is also home to 75 different species and breeds of Scandinavian domestic and wild animals such as seals, lynx, elks and brown bears. This includes The Baltic Sea Center with ocean life from the Baltic Sea. The park is a members of several organizations that work with species preservation, science and education.

The annual holidays are always celebrated at Skansen in a traditional manner, including Sweden’s National Day, Midsummer, Lucia and Christmas. Skansen is open every day all year round. In the houses and farmsteads there are historical interpreters in period dress. They explain to visitors how people lived in earlier times and they demonstrate traditional activities such as spinning, weaving, knitting and other crafts. You can travel back in time and meet people from the past or learn a “forgotten” craft.

Enjoy a delicious meal in one of Skansen’s restaurants with breathtaking views over Stockholm. And don’t miss the museum shop, which sells traditionally handicrafted and Swedish design products for decor, functional fashion, camping or the household.

Blockhusudden’s Lighthouse

The lighthouse at Blockhusudden lies just off the coast and was installed in 1905. It became an AGA lighthouse in 1912 after Gustaf Dalén’s invention, a sun valve, was installed. Gustaf Dalén was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1912 for his invention of the sun valve. He became completely blind after an accident in which acetylene gas exploded in his face. Dalén’s inventions; the Dalén flasher, the sun valve and the automatic mantle exchange, formed the foundation of the AGA company and its AGA lighthouses.

AGA lighthouses can function without maintenance for up to a year.

Gustaf Fröding’s Statue

Gustaf Frödings staty på Royal Djurgården

The sculpture of Gustav Fröding is located by Djurgårdsbron. The poet Fröding is gazing towards his last home, Villa Gröndal, where he was cared for in the beginning of the 1900s for his mental illness.

Fröding lived in the house together with this caretaker and partner, Signe Trotzig, until his death on 8th February 1911. In 1948 Villa Gröndal was bought by the industrialist Erland Waldenström, who renovated the building and saved it from decay. Villa Gröndal was originally the residence for one of the huntsmen who assisted with the royal hunts on Djurgården.

Around the statue and Villa Gröndal there is a abundance of bird life. The lawn is inhabited by geese, and during the night tawny owls can be heard.
