Amazing findings by The Wreck’s Musems marine archaeologists

Museum Vrak’s naval archaeologists have worked together with the Navy to find Vasa’s sister ship Äpplet. Not only did they find the ship that sank in 1659, now they have also found a sculpture in fine condition, which is a fantastic and unexpected discovery.

The regal ship Vasa was not the only ship that King Gustav II Adolf ordered to be built. Just over a year after the sinking of Vasa in 1628, the Äpplet was put into service for the 30 year war, which lasted all the way until 1659 when the Äpplet was deliberately sunk outside Vaxholm. After a lot of research and investigations, a wreck was found in December 2021, which after several samples turned out to be the long-awaited ship Äpplet.

Wreck’s marine archaeologists have worked together with the Navy during the spring to recreate an image of the wreck using 3D technology. You find two large wooden lions that should have been in the stern of the ship and also an apple that would have been the national apple, the apple that gave the ship its name.

Due to the environment of the Baltic Sea, it creates the best conditions for the material to be preserved for many years. That is why the Vasa ship at the Vasa Museum is preserved at 98% of its original form. At Vrak – Museum of Wreck’s – in Wasahamnen there is an opportunity to go on a themed weekend where they tell you everything about the ship Apple’s time above the surface, below the surface and the newest findings.

Read more about the findings and the ship here.

New exhibitions this summer!

Every summer several new exhibitions open at the Royal Djurgården museums, and this summer is no exception. A whole new world of excitement awaits at Junibacken in the new exhibition about Emil in Lönneberga, at the National Sports Museum new art connected to sports awaits in Konsthall 16 and at Sjöhistoriska the exhibition “Planet or Plastic?” with the aim of reducing the amount of plastic that ends up in our oceans. This is just a small part of everything new that will be shown at Djurgården’s museums this summer. Below we have collected some of our best tips for exhibitions opening this summer. For more information about ongoing and upcoming exhibitions see our calendar.

Three new exhibitions await at Liljevalchs this summer
Several interesting exhibitions open at Liljevalchs this summer. The exhibition “Karin Broos, Svart Sol” opens on June 2. Karin is one of Sweden’s most prominent painters and this exhibition is the largest presentation of her work. The motives in Karin Broo’s visual world are few, everyday and recurring. Standing and seated figures at a bathing jetty. Sleep in beds and sofas. Women and children in front of the bathroom mirror. In the seemingly uneventful, significant moments and moods are captured that normally escape our attention.

Shortly afterwards, on June 16, two more new exhibitions “New York Imprint” by Barbro Östlihn and “IKONER”, photographs by Lars-Åke Thuresson” will open at Liljevalchs. Barbro Östlihn is one of the most interesting artists in post-war painting. In the midst of the circles where American pop art and neo-realism were shaped, in the 1960s she carved out an expression of her own.

Photo: Liljevalchs.se, Agneta Fältskog 1970, Thuressons Photo Collection

In the IKONER exhibition, you are welcomed into Lars-Åke Thuresson’s photographic world. During the 1960s and 70s, the photographer was called Lars-Åke “Skuggan” Thuresson, as during this time he photographed over 100 international and 200 Swedish music artists and groups. His archive of photographs made up a collection of 65,000 images and of these 200 works have been selected which this summer will be shown in the exhibition at Liljevalchs. Here they are all: troubadours, rock artists, international and Swedish pop idols, pop stars and ABBA.

Some of the images have previously been published in the press and as album covers, but most have basically been unknown to the public. In addition to pictures, period posters, LPs and magazines are also displayed. The exhibition is on display until September.

A new world of fun at Junibacken!
A whole new world of fun awaits at Junibacken with the new exhibition “Eeemil – Snickerboa hopp fallera” which opened on 1 June. This year, Emil in Lönneberga celebrates 60 years, and Junibacken draws attention to this with, among other things, this exhibition.

A recommendation for those of you who are going to visit the exhibition is to bring your best cheerleader mood! Find the right path in the wood maze, play hide and seek (psst, there’s a good hiding place in the mouse hole) and check out all the goodies in the food stall. Bounce around on planing shavings and peek into the carpenter’s bench. And if an adult you feel is missing, there are plenty of lookouts..

A guiding star in the work with the exhibition has been Astrid Lindgren’s manifesto “For children’s right to be children and for children’s right to play!”

Planet or Plastic?
On June 2, National Geographic’s exhibition “Planet or Plastic?” opens. at Sjöhistoriska here at Royal Djurgården. The exhibition is based on National Geographic’s multi-year global initiative that aims to reduce the amount of single-use plastic that ends up in the oceans. The exhibition is on display at the museum until February 2024.

The arena at Konsthall 16
At the Riksidrottsmuseet you will find Konsthall 16, Sweden’s first art hall that depicts the meeting between sport and art. The art gallery is the result of a collaboration between Tore A Jonasson’s foundation and the National Sports Museum. Three exhibitions are presented each year with a focus on Swedish and Nordic contemporary art. The foundation was founded by Tore A Jonassons (1916-2015) and this summer the exhibition “Arena – Tore A Jonasson’s collection” will be shown.

The arena is the place for public events, sporting as well as cultural and political. In the fourth exhibition of new acquisitions to Tore A Jonasson’s collection, some artists portray the scene itself, the arena, while others refer to more metaphorical scenes for existential, personal and poetic stories. The exhibition is on display until September 24 at the National Sports Museum in Konsthall 16.

Brave Wine at Spritmuseum
Write down June 14 in your calendar, that’s when the unique photo exhibition Brave Wine opens at Spritmuseum. The exhibition is about the Ukrainian wine industry, which has been largely destroyed during Russia’s war of invasion. Here you get to hear gripping stories from winemakers who have had to see generations of life’s work erased. But you’ll also get to experience the passion and ingenuity that drives them to continue.

Take part in personal stories from within the Ukrainian wine industry and describe the everyday life of winemakers with setbacks and challenges, since the war broke out. The exhibition is on display until August 24 (National Day of Ukraine).

Kristina Skantze
Photo: Kristina Skantze, Handarbetets Vänner

On June 15, Handarbetets Vänner’s summer exhibition “Beröringspunkter” opens, which brings together the three textile artists Linnea Matei, Kristina Skantze and Emilia Sundqvist. They all work sculpturally, three-dimensionally and tactilely with textiles. The body is in focus in this exhibition and opens up to questions that concern the personal body in relation to encounters with other bodies. The exhibition runs until September 2 this year. Open opening 15 June at 16.00-18.00.

So take a friend by the arm and guide the steps towards new exhibition experiences at Djurgården this summer. Take an extra look at our website before your visit, we are constantly updating with exciting news and events, so you don’t miss a thing!

An island of art and culture

Djurgården is unique with its greenery in the middle of a capitol city like Stockholm. Artists have always come here to share or seek inspiration for their art, from Bellman and his songs to Prince Eugene and his unique way of capturing Stockholm on canvas.

This long-standing tradition has, of course, contributed to Djurgården now boasting one of Europe’s most impressive art collections and cultural heritages. You can’t walk around the island without being greeted by a wonderful inner peace and tranquillity that makes you want to explore your own creative vein.

Throughout spring there will be a continuous stream of new and interesting exhibitions in many of our museums. Paris of the North at Nordiska museet

Timeless elegance, exquisite craftsmanship and tailor-made dreams

Travel back in time to the golden age of haute couture and the northernmost outpost of Paris fashion in Nordiska museet’s new fashion exhibition Paris of the North. The exhibition, which opens on September 17, presents fashion from the French Couture Atelier at the NK department store in Stockholm during the 20th century.

The trendy fashion atelier of that time, created personal-made masterpieces based on customers’ unique measurements by the highest craftsmanship that still inspires to this day. Some of the design brands that were ordered by the Scandinavian public included Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, and Yves Saint Laurent. It was NK’s French Couture Atelier that spread international fashion in the Nordic countries.

In Paris of the North you get to learn both about the customers of the well-known atelier, as well as the tailors working inside of it. Customers included royalty, upper-class society, professional women, and the stars of stage and screen. Among those celebrities were Princess Sibylla, Queen Louise Mountbatten, Astrid Sampe, Nanna Svartz, Greta Garbo, and Zarah Leander. The customers arrived at the atelier via the legendary golden elevator from the beauty and fragrance department on the ground floor, straight up to the sophisticated pearl grey salon.

At Royal Djurgården, Christmas is always close to the heart, which means we turn our island into real Christmas paradise. Food and drinks are a huge part of the Christmas celebration and we are getting ready to offer all our visitors a proper Christmas buffet experience.

In Sweden we love our Christmas buffet – or “Julbord” as we call it. A Julbord is filled with an abundance of all the food we love and we serve it as a “Smörgårdsbord” – simply a buffet.  Common courses on the Christmas buffet is herring, meatballs, Jansson’s temptation and Christmas ham. Today vegetarian dishes have made their way up on the Julbord side by side with the more traditional.

Here are our best Christmas buffets tips!

Astrid Lindgren’s excellence as a writer is known the world over. No Swedish author has been translated into as many languages, and many of us know and love her most famous character Pippi Longstocking.

Liljevalchs 100 years Anniversary 2021

Nu firar Liljevalchs 100 års jubileum i sitt vackra hus.

Since 1916, Liljevalchs has been an engine in Swedish art life. Here we remind you of the art gallery’s highlights and its history of more than 100 years. From the inaugural exhibition in 1916 with the top trio of the time Carl Larsson, Bruno Liljefors and Anders Zorn, to the 2020 pandemic presentation of Hilding Linnqvist.

When Liljevalchs was inaugurated in 1916, the Swedish Artists’ Association achieved the goal of creating an independent art gallery for permanent exhibitions of contemporary art. From the early years, Liljevalchs was established as an art gallery for both art and crafts, internationally and nationally, classics and contemporary.

Starting October 15, Liljevalchs presents scenes from 48 different exhibitions, reminding us of the breakthrough of modernists in 1918 and the Association of Swedish Artists’ Exhibition in 1921 with names such as Sigrid Hjertén and Siri Derkert, about the political 1960s with both The Nasty and Erotic Art, about Kjartan Slettemark’s poodle in 1975 and Hilma af Klint’s temple paintings in 1999.

In several exhibitions the home’s interior design and everyday design was noticed over they years starting in the Home Exhibition in 1917, and famous names such as Carl Malmsten, Märta Måås-Fjetterström and Josef Frank have of course been seen at Liljevalchs.

In 2012 Strindberg’s exhibition SexPosé the August. En djefla utställning was named Exhibition of the year, as was the spectacular fashion show Utopian Bodies. Fashion Looks Forward in 2015.

In 1952, a huge investment was made for the exhibition Mexican art from antiquity to present time as it required 12 train carriages for all objects. No wonder the exhibition broke the visitor record, the exhibition had an audience of 212,431 people.

These are just some of the highlights that are being shown in the exhibition which will be displayed between October 15, 2021, to January 16, 2022, in the Bergsten house.

Find out more about Liljevalchs 100 years anniversary here.

Exhibition visits in fall – Some tips

Leaves are changing color, evenings are getting darker, and the cold is creeping in, fall is here soon. What better way than to Visit Djurgården and warm up at one of the many photo and art exhibitions that will be shown this fall?

Djurgården offers everything from photo exhibitions about women and democracy to the people of Värmland, its nature, and societies. If you are more interested in textile work, Friends of Handicraft’s gallery and the Thiel Gallery offers exhibitions on weaving, fabrics, and pattern sketches, among others. In addition, Prince Eugene’s Waldemarsudde will show Prince Eugene’s famous paintings, such as Molnet and Det gamla slottet, as well as lesser well known pieces from the museum’s rich collections that are rarely shown to the public.

Here are tips on exhibitions that can be viewed this fall here at Djurgården.

Elected to Lead

The Hunger Project along with The National Museums of World Culture welcomes you to their fall photo exhibition, Elected to Lead. The exhibition’s focus is on women and democracy, bringing up issues such as what happens when women gain influence on a society on the same terms as men?

Here you get to meet Lokamma, Shahida, Jagadevi, Guthyamma, Khublata, and Laxmi – six Indian women who have all fought for their places in politics. Six women who were elected to lead. The exhibition will be shown until January 16, 2022.

Studio Supersju

On October 8, Friends of Handicraft  opens a new exhibition. The exhibition Studio Supersju is the weaving group who in 2016 decided to give contemporary weaving a face. The group consists of  Siri Pettersson, Arianna E.Funk, Vega Määttä Siltberg, Miriam Parkman, Mirjam Hemström and Ia Centerhall and spread across  the country, they work for weaving as an innovative tradition. The exhibition is showed until November 20, this year.

Örjan Henriksson at Liljevalchs+

For four years, the photographer Örjan Henriksson has done deep dives into the landscapes of his childhood and his family in Värmland. Liljevalchs shows an excerpt from this project which depicts the people, nature, and the communities.

Örjan Henriksson is one of Sweden’s foremost photographers with a low-key and concentrated storytelling in image form. He loves the analog black and white photography and has had a number of high-profile exhibitions around the world. In 2015, he was awarded the first Bindefeld Scholarship in memory of the Holocaust.

The exhibition, with five big and 13 smaller photographies, are shown in Liljevalchs+ between September 24 and November 7.

Soul of a Place at Prince Eugens Waldemarsudde

One of the fall exhibitions shown at Waldemarsudde is Soul of a Place with focus on Prince Eugen as a landscape painter. With his suggestive and and atmospheric depictions of Swedish nature, Eugen was one of the leading landscape painters at the turn of the 20th century. The exhibition presents famous paintings, such as Molnet and Det gamla slottet, as well as lesser well known pieces from the museum’s rich collections that are rarely shown to the public.

The exhibition is, for the visitors, displayed as a journey to these places, through Prince Eugen’s paintings which is exhibited from November 14, 2021, to May 1, 2022. Read more about Waldemarsudde’s exhibitions here.

Carl Johan De Geer – The big misconception

In the early 60’s, Carl Johan De Geer began to produce large-pattern, imaginative, expressive prints in strong, contrasting color combinations. It was a revolt against the brown-walled discreet ideals of the time and the aesthetic values of growing up. Through shape and color, he wanted to influence the whole society.

Since then, Carl Johan De Geer (b. 1938) has been a prominent figure in Swedish cultural life. Innovative, provocative, and brilliantly versatile, he worked as a visual artist, designer, filmmaker, photographer, set designer, as well as author. However, he knew already from the beginning that he wanted to become a textile designer.

The exhibition presents his textile work. Fabrics and patterns are displayed together with photographs from the same time period. Films are also shown where Carl Johan De Geer talks about his inspiration and production. The exhibition will be shown at the Thiel Gallery from October 16 to March 20, 2022.

Take part in all the fun that’s happening here at Djurgården this fall, here.
